Training Your Replacement

William (Gus) Pagonis served in the US Army for 29 years, and he achieved the rank of Lieutenant General (that’s is a 3-star General) before he retired in 1993.

He said, “One of the factors taken for granted in the military is that you’re always training your replacement. As an officer, you’ll usually be rotated to new assignments every one to three years, so it’s your job to prepare someone to do your job.”

He goes on to say, “I’ve tried to transfer this philosophy to the civilian world. There’s an easy test to gauge how well you’re training your replacements. Answer this question: When you’re on vacation, how well does your team function? If your team can’t get along without you, then you’re not doing a good job as a leader. You may be incredibly competent and talented. You may be respected, liked, and appreciated. You may be a hardworking model of integrity, but if you’ve made yourself indispensable, then you’re not doing your job as a leader.”

When you’re on vacation, how well does your team function?

There have been many organizations, churches, missionary societies, and businesses that have failed because the leader didn’t train others to take his or her place. There is no real success without a succession plan.

If you’re part of any organization, and if you’ve made yourself indispensable, then you’re not doing your job as a leader.

One of the greatest detriments to empowering people is the desire to feel needed. If you get your ego fed, if you get your satisfaction from being needed, then you’ll have a hard time being highly successful because you will want to be indispensable and you won’t want to develop others.

Successful people develop others, and they train their replacements, and I’m gonna guess that this is something that you do, because this IS what winners do, and you are a winner, and given enough time, you WILL win! Yes, you ARE a winner!

Hi, this is Don Howe, and the topic for this Golden Nugget is “Training Your Replacement”.

End of quote. Isn’t that great advice?!

I love the question: When you’re on vacation, how well does your team function?
