Timing is Everything – Sales Tip

I was watching a lecture by a magician named Stan Allen, and he shared some good advice for any performer who might have to deal with hecklers. He basically said that timing is everything! If you’re giving a show and a heckler starts giving you a rough way to go, if you, quote unquote, “attack the heckler” too soon, then you’re gonna have trouble, because in the beginning, the heckler is part of the crowd. In other words, the crowd will turn on you if you confront the heckler too soon, because, in the beginning, the crowd views the heckler as one of them. However, if you wait long enough, the heckler will begin to aggravate the rest of the crowd and will alienate him or herself. Once the heckler’s aggravated the rest of the crowd, the crowd will then be on your side, and that’s when you can deal with the heckler. Yes, in this situation, timing is everything, but this also applies to other situations as well. For many years, I met with people in their homes, and my job was to make sure they had adequate life insurance protection. If they already had life insurance, in order to do my job properly, I needed to see their current policies, so I could verify what type of and how much coverage they already had in place. I learned early on, that if I were to ask them to see their policies too soon, before they felt like they could trust me, then they simply would not show them to me! And the worst part was that if they said no to me just one time, then it was really difficult to get them to change their mind. Through trial and error I learned the importance of timing. My wife, she also understands the importance of timing! Her mother taught her that whenever possible, don’t ask your husband or your father to make an important decision immediately after he gets home from work. Wait until he’s had dinner! Now that’s wise advice, because timing is important, and my question for you is, “If you’re given enough time, will your understanding of the importance of timing be one of the reasons why everybody will consider you to be a winner?”
