Things to Remember when Selling

One of the best ways to influence people is to really care about them, to be genuinely concerned for their best interests. People can feel when you don’t care for them. They can tell when you’re simply trying to make a sale. If you truly care for people and if you’re competent when it comes to selling, then you’re going to make a lot of money! On the other hand, if you don’t care about people, I don’t care how competent you are, eventually you’ll become cynical, you’ll become bitter, and no matter how hard you try to hide it, your attitudes will come to the surface! Selling is a difficult profession, but it’s much harder if you try to be something on the outside that you’re not on the inside. Charles Hobbs calls this being incongruent. Trying to be something on the outside that you’re not on the inside is also a good definition of a hypocrite. Do your best to be concerned for others. Do what’s best for them and, in the long run, you’ll be happier and you’ll be more successful!

Full Transcript: Hi, this is Don Howe, and the topic for this Golden Nugget is “Selling”, and this one’s especially applicable for those of you who sell Final Expense Life Insurance. One of the best ways to influence people is to really care about them, to be genuinely concerned for their best interests. People can feel when you don’t care for them. They can tell when you’re simply trying to make a sale. I recently read a story that illustrates what I’m trying to say. Once upon a time, about 2,000 years ago, Jesus was in the synagogue, and He was teaching on the Sabbath, and He saw a man whose right hand was withered. The Scribes, the Pharisees, they were watching Him closely. They wanted to see if He was going to heal on the Sabbath. They didn’t care about the man whose hand was withered! They simply wanted to keep their rules! And I know that sometimes, agents who sell Final Expense Life Insurance don’t care about people. They simply want to make the sale, so they can collect a commission. This isn’t good! It doesn’t matter what you sell! If you’re a salesperson, don’t get so caught up making the sale that you forget to care about people! Now I know that there are going to be times that you’re going to get aggravated with a buyer, but don’t allow yourself to talk about them in a negative way. Simply feel bad for them and, if you’re the type of person who prays, then pray for them. If you truly care for others, they’re going to know it, and when it comes to selling, this is some of the best advice that I can give to you! Make sure that you care for others! Let me ask you this, “If you’re given enough time, will your concern for others be one of the reasons why everybody will consider you to be a winner?” Thank you for listening to this Golden Nugget by Don Howe.
