Expectations – A Lesson from African Folklore

My friend Daniel has spent many many years in Africa, and according to African folklore: once upon a time, when the normal dowery for a wife was two or three cows, there was a less than average looking woman who everyone thought would be fortunate if anyone would offer to pay even one cow for her. Well, one day, the oldest son of the great chief went to talk with this girl’s father. After a brief negotiation, the man offered to pay ten cows for this girl! The father, of course, was thrilled and accepted the offer, and before long, everyone in the village knew that the son of the chief had paid ten cows for his future bride! When the great wedding day arrived, the groom looked handsome, which was to be expected, but when the bride came out of her hut, everyone was stunned! This girl, whose beauty had been described as less than average had been transformed and she was now the most beautiful woman in the whole village! Her smile! Her eyes! Her confidence! She was radiant! Everyone was amazed! That is, except the son of the chief. He had seen that she possessed the inner beauty, the beauty that was always there, but just needed to be released, and in the same way each person possesses inner beauty that just needs to be released. Yes, give a man or a woman a good name to live up to and you’ll be surprised at what they can do. If you have children, speak into their lives in a positive manner. Tell them how great they’re gonna be. Tell them that they were created for a purpose. And while you’re at it, look at yourself in the mirror and say to yourself, “I was created for a purpose. I am special. There are things that only I can do, and God has placed me on this earth to add value to others. God wants me to make a positive difference in this world.” Yes, you are special, and you were created for a purpose, and if you were the African woman in this story, I’ll bet that you would’ve been a twenty cow wife, because you are a winner, and given enough time, you WILL win! Yes, you ARE a winner!

Full Transcript: Hi, this is Don Howe, and the topic for this Golden Nugget is “Expectation”, and I’m gonna share a story that a friend of mine, Daniel Kenaston, shared with me. You see, Daniel has spent many many years in Africa, and according to African folklore: once upon a time, when the normal dowery for a wife was two or three cows, there was a less than average looking woman who everyone thought would be fortunate if anyone would offer to pay even one cow for her. Well, one day, the oldest son of the great chief went to talk with this girl’s father. After a brief negotiation, the man offered to pay ten cows for this girl!
