Eternity

The topic for this Golden Nugget is Eternity. I was thinking about this because last Sunday, my pastor, Larry Copely, said that if you have an eternal perspective on life, then the bad things that happen to you aren’t usually all that bad, and the good things that happen to you aren’t really all that great. But what caused me to record this Golden Nugget wasn’t what he said – it was a memory that I had from about 35 years ago when I first heard someone give an illustration where they were trying to describe eternity. What I heard goes something like this… Imagine a Granite Rock that covers 1 square mile.  Oh, it’s also about a mile high. Now, imagine that once a year, a little sparrow flies up to the rock and sharpens it’s beak on the rock. Now, Assuming there’s no other erosion, and assuming the sparrow can live forever, can you imagine how long it would take for that sparrow to completely wear the rock away? That’s a long time! And now that you’ve imagined the rock being worn away by the little sparrow who comes once a year to sharpen it’s beak… imagine that all of this took place during the first day of eternity. Well, that’s how I remember it, and I suppose instead saying that it was the first day of eternity, it could’ve been the first hour, or the first minute or the first second. You see, I can’t even comprehend the rock ever being worn away – and along those same lines – I can’t comprehend eternity because I was born into a world that’s governed by time. I know that I have a limited number of days here on this earth. I don’t know exactly how many days I have, but it’s pretty safe to say that I’m more than half way through my life, here on this earth! Yes, I like to think about things like eternity, infinite space and if God is Eternal, then where did He come from? Of course, we just won’t know the answers to some of these things as long as we live in a body that’s governed by time. But for me, the real question is – once my body dies, what does my mind, my consciousness, or my soul end up doing? Hey, I’m not trying to tell ya what to think or what to believe… I’m simply challenging you to keep growing in all areas of life – whether it’s physical, spiritual, mental, or social. After all, once something stops growing, it quite often begins to die and then rot. However, I don’t expect you to stop growing, because winners keep growing and you are a winner, and given enough time, you WILL Win – Yes, you ARE a Winner.
