Choose Your Companions Wisely

When Goliath went out to fight David, he had a shield bearer. This was a guy whose job was to help Goliath carry his weapons, and this was probably quite an honor, but as soon as Goliath was hit by the rock from David’s sling, the shield bearer ran away. This guy didn’t even try to stop David from chopping off Goliath’s head, and this is a good reminder that if you want to be successful then you’ve got to choose your companions wisely!

King Solomon said, “He who walks with wise men will be wise, but the companions of fools will suffer harm.

Like I said earlier, it was probably quite an honor to be the shield bearer for Goliath, because everyone likes to hang out with those who are popular, but remember this, most of the time, you won’t know who your true friends are until you encounter difficult times.

As a matter of fact, you might not even know what your own character is like until you encounter difficult times. And this is why we need to welcome and learn from difficult times.

Yes, many people will proclaim their loyalty, but when trouble or difficulties arise, most of them will run away. You might have friends who join you in an endeavor. They might even join you on the battlefield. They might shout and join in with battle cries, but then, as soon as they encounter opposition, their true character will be revealed and they’ll flee back to their comfort zone and they’ll leave you alone. They will desert you.

I’m gonna guess that what I’m about to say is something that you already know, but it’s good to be reminded, and here it is:

Given enough time, you will become very similar to your five closest friends. The people with whom you spend your time determine what conversations dominate your attention and to which attitudes and opinions you hear on a regular basis. Given enough time, you will start to eat what they eat, you will start to talk like they talk, you will start to read what they read, you’ll begin to think like they think, you’ll watch what they watch, you’ll treat people how they treat people, and you’ll even dress like they dress. And this is why you’ve got to choose your companions wisely.

If you wanna stay humble, hungry, and inspired, then make it a habit to spend time with people who are more successful than you are. And I’m talking about in all areas of life.

In other words, if you’re always the most physically fit person in the group that you hang out with, then you are in trouble. If you’re always the most intelligent person in the group that you hang out with, then you are in trouble. If you’re always the most spiritual person in the group that you hang out with, then you are in trouble. If you’re always the wealthiest person in the group that you hang out with, then you are in trouble. You get the idea.

Make sure that every so often, you hang out with people who are more successful than you are, because this is what winners do, and you are a winner, and given enough time, you WILL win! Yes, you ARE a winner!

Hi, this is Don Howe, and the topic for this Golden Nugget is “Choose Your Companions Wisely”, and I’m gonna start out with a thought that I had as I was reading the story of David and Goliath.

You see, when Goliath went out to fight David, he had a shield bearer.

King Solomon said, “He who walks with wise men will be wise, but the companions of fools will suffer harm.”

Like I said earlier, it was probably quite an honor to be the shield bearer for Goliath, because everyone likes to hang out with those who are popular, but remember this, most of the time, you won’t know who your true friends are until you encounter difficult times.
